As a convenience for our customers we offer to handle
the registration/transfer procedure for .com, .net, .org and .de domains.
However, this is no obligation. You can also register your
domains elsewhere.
Making a self-registered domain work with our server boxes is easy.
After registering it with the registrar of your choice you just need to make
them point the so-called 'A' and 'MX' DNS records to the IP address
of your box. That's it. Usually, you can do this yourself via a
web interface, including defining subdomains etc.
Alternatively, if you would like us to host the zone files (the
database with the relevant DNS information) for your
domain on our DNS servers, we can arrange for this as well. In
addition to registering the domain with a registrar of your choice you
would order it as a subdomain in our system, and once our DNS servers
got updated accordingly, all you need to do is tell the registrar
the domain names of our DNS servers (for the 'NS' records).
Adding subdomains etc. on request would then be our responsibility.
As to independent registrars, for international customers there are,
for instance,
"register.com"
and
"Network Solutions"
(now run by VeriSign),
while your favorite search engine will help you out when it comes to
country specific domains. For the German-speaking region (.de, .at, .ch)
"united-domains"
and
"providerDOMAIN.de"
come to mind (who also do non-country specific domains). These are
just a few suggestions, and your mileage may vary.
